Horse Studies

I'm trying to learn how to draw horses as reference for a project. This is the first time I've ever tried to draw a horse in earnest, so I thought I'd record my transition from the not-good-at-all to the not-very-bad. The black and white pencil are my first attempts, while the color pencils are the second.

Doc Flamingo

Here are some (very) preliminary sketches of a new comic Doc Flamingo that my friend Andrew Pearson is scripting and I will be illustrating. We're hoping to have a 12-page mini out in time for San Diego this year.

Museum of Natural History Day

Last weekend Maasa, Natalie, and I went back to the Natural History Museum to sketch the animals. It was enough fun I think I'm going to make it a regular excursion from now on.

An Indian lion and Sumatran rhinoceros.

Rhino and Malaysian wild dog.

African lion and lioness. I know I exaggerated the lion on the left's face a little, but I couldn't really help myself since every single family that walked by the exhibit as I was sketching would scream, "Look, it's Mufasa!"

I've spent much of the past two years absorbed in figuring out the subtleties of the well-placed contour line. It's refreshing to start fleshing out planes again.

Petticoat a la Olan Mills

Did a few touch-ups to this one.

I tried to fix some small placement problems with Sheila. Very minor changes. Here's the original:

Fair Play Storyboards

Boards from a personal project I started working on before I was called in for Speed Racer and Petticoat. I'd like to start working on it again now that I have some free time.

More Concept Art

Here's Petticoat looking a little more competent than usual.

It's been a while since I inked anything so I spent a lot of time practicing brush lines. When I finished the illustration, my practice page ended up looking kind of cool in its own right:

A couple more concept drawings left to go.

ASIFA Pose Sessions #6

The live model never showed up for the ASIFA drawing session last night, so people from the class modeled instead. It was interesting to do gestures of clothes for once. These are all 1-2 minute sketches.

Washington Bullets Redux

The revised 1986 Washington Bullets drawing. Here's the original drawing:

was considered too passive, so I turned up the crazy a little. More coming!

Website Roughs

Been a drawing fool lately. Working on a number of concept sketches. These are fairly large-scale sketches.

Office front door.

Petticoat setting up a free-throw during his run with the 1986 Washington Bullets.

Rough -- soon to be fully inked.

I still have a few proportion issues to work out before I put it to the brush.

I have a few more sketches in the works. I'll post them soon. I've also started work on character sketches for a new Doc Flamingo comic with my friend Andrew Pearson. I will post those once I finish all the Petticoat concept sketches.
